Poet, nonfiction writer, psychoanalyst, and professor, Nuar Alsadir explores consciousness and the construction of selfhood through the intertwined lenses of laughter and psychoanalysis. Departing from Alsadir’s investigations into the unconscious in Animal Joy (2022) and Fourth Person Singular (2017), the talk considers how slips of the tongue and other eruptions from the unconscious—including laughter—disrupt the coherence of the speaking subject, revealing the unstable terrain of the first person. Moving between psychoanalytic thought and experimental prose, Alsadir posits the fourth person singular, a quantumly entangled subject position that takes into account the degree to which the first person “I” is staged, performed, and continually shaped by language and image.
